Live in Stockholm and have a day off?

Hello again!

Today I would like to show you some interesting and magical places, where you could go to spend a nice day off from work. As I told you already in one of my previous posts, Stockholm has a lot of places where to go in a sunny day and the transportation system allows you to visit other small cities in the surroundings using your SL Card, so you don’t need to spend extra money for a quick trip close to Stockholm.

I am the type of person that prefers to explore and see new things instead of just sitting in the same place every week, so I’m always trying to find new places where to go (my boyfriend is not always happy about it 😉. Here you will find some important information about my favorite places around Stockholm.

What to do in Sigtuna

Sigtuna is the town where Sweden began, it was the first town funded in Sweden. It is a small town situated in the Sigtuna Municipality, around 50 km from the Central Station in Stockholm and 20 km from the Arlanda Airport. If you would like to go there using your SL Card you can take a community train (Pendeltåg) from Central Station to Märsta, then switch to the bus number 570 or 575 to Sigtuna. The whole trip should take around 1 hour. During summer time, you could go there also by boat with Strömma. All the information about prices and time schedules are available here and here!

According to the history of Sweden, back in 970 the king Erik the Victorious decided to build a town in the place where Sigtuna is located nowadays. You can find there several Viking runes and as well as ruins of iconic places such as the first church of Sigtuna. If you are interested in learning about the the history of Sigtuna, there is a guided tour that takes you through the history of the town, or you can always simply ask the friendly staff in the tourist information office about some key facts regarding the town.

I think it is a great place to visit in early June or late August, because then you can truly enjoy the visit without the usual chaos that takes place during summer, when it can get really crowded there sometimes.

What to do in Norrtälje

Another small town near Stockholm is Norrtälje, which is located around 60 km north-east from Stockholm. It’s very easy to go to Norrtälje from Stockholm, you just need to take the bus 676 from Tekniska Högskolan or Danderyd Sjukhus. Busses have a departure schedule of almost every ten minutes and you will need around 1 hour 15 min to reach there.

I think it is a good place to visit with family and to take a walk next to the harbor and see the old style of the Swedish architecture. There is a lovely ice cream shop in the center of the town (sorry, I don’t remember the name), where you can enjoy a really tasty ice cream and coffee for some fika.

If you would like to know more about the life of the Vikings I would suggest you to take a bus from Norrtälje to Storholmen, the Viking Village. I haven’t gone there yet because the time I visited Norrtälje the village was closed due to a big fire taking place there, but I am sure that I will visit this place next time I go to Norrtälje 😊.

What to do in Nynäshamn

Many people who recently moved to Stockholm are constantly looking for a nice beach with an open view to the sea. Unfortunately, Stockholm doesn’t have so many places like that because several islands conform it, so usually you can see land on the other side of the water.

I know only about one place near Stockholm with this type of beach and it’s called Nynäshamn, a small town located 60 km to the south of Stockholm. As with the other towns on this blog, you can go there using your SL Card. You need to take the community train (Pendeltåg) from the Central Station, and the trip is only one hour.

Nynäshamn has more interesting places to visit than just the beach. You can find there a beautiful harbor, where you can buy fresh fish or have a fika enjoying the weather and view. There is a train museum in town or you could just take a simple walk around the town and see how many old cars you can spot 😊.
